Brew a Better Day: Wherein I turn my routine into a ritual

It certainly is a great day when I wake, swing my feet over the side of the bed to warm comfy slippers, and grab for my robe. No matter how tired I am or how busy my day will soon become, it’s all good because the next part of my morning routine consists of brewing my first cup of coffee. The aroma awakens me, the warm cup comforts me, and the ebony liquid fills me. I like this routine, it gives me a sense of security. Have you ever mixed up your morning routine to find yourself dashing out of the house without your laptop, glasses, or wallet?

Daily I brew my coffee into my favorite cup then slowly shuffle to my sunny office at the front of my house. The funny thing is, and I do this every day, I take that first sip as I walk, almost dribbling it down my chin or tipping the hot liquid over my hand. Why can’t I simply wait the five seconds until I sit down in my office chair? Because I can’t let something that smells so enticing wait. A favorite of mine is Green Mountain Coffee’s Colombian K-Cup packs for a bold and rich start to my day. With 250 varieties of K-Cup packs, it can be hard to narrow it down to a few favorites, but I do like Green Mountain Coffee Breakfast Blend too. No wonder Green Mountain Coffee is the best-selling brand for Keurig brewing systems: 40 choices, yippee!

While sitting in my chaise (yes, my office chair is a chaise lounge), I stare through my front window at the birds and chipmunks as I sip my coffee and gather my thoughts for the day. But there are some days when my thoughts drift to memories of European cafes with white table clothes, or quaint bistro tables lining a cobblestone sidewalk that beckon me to bring my coffee routine to the next level: a ritual.

A ritual is a routine that has been enhanced to something more rich and meaningful and to some can be considered spiritual. Try adding touches to your coffee break, like a small chocolate or cookie served alongside of your coffee cup, or sipping your coffee from a cup placed on a small saucer and enjoying the repetitive “chink” the cup makes with the dish. I also enjoy changing my coffee break location from my office to the small bistro set on my front porch so I can hear and enjoy the birds’ song and sunshine on my face.

What has always amazed me about the Keurig brewing system is how quickly I can satisfy my coffee tooth, but how the coffee always tastes slow-brewed: instant gratification without the instant taste. I am already a happy gal, but these tiny coffee rituals sprinkled through my week make me even happier. Rich even! Green Mountain Coffee can be a part of your great day routine, but why not up the ante and turn it into a ritual for an even better great day?

It must be pure as an angel.
    Strong as love.
    Black as the devil
    And hot as hell.
