“I have a gut feeling” A Brief on Probiotics

Thank you to Yakult USA for sponsoring this article. Learn why Yakult’s exclusive L. casei Shiorta probiotic strain can make all the difference for digestive health.

Maybe the Father of Modern Medicine, Hippocrates, had it right all along – “all diseases begin in the gut.” Our digestive system is lined with 100 trillion microorganisms, which includes 400 types of bacteria.  This little city of microorganisms in our gut is called our normal flora.  It’s job is to protect our body from harmful microorganisms that cause disease (70% of our immune system is in our gut), and break down foods (digestion) into bits so tiny that those nutrients can be passed through our digestive systems walls into our blood to nourish our bodies.  But are all bacteria in our gut good?

Yes and no, some of the bacteria are good and beneficial, working in harmony with our bodies and some are bad, causing disease and discomfort. An unbalance between the good and bad bacteria happens when we…

  1. Do not get enough sleep, chronic sleep deprivation
  2. Undergo constant stress
  3. Take antibiotics and other meds like NSAIDS (ask your doctor if the meds you are taking are harming your normal flora)
  4. Consume a high sugar and processed food diet

So now what?
There are little things called Probiotics. Probiotics are the good guys, the beneficial and harmonic bacteria that promote good digestion, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, improve immune function and resistance to infection.  You remember classification in science class, right? Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species and something about King Philip. But with probiotics we need to concern ourselves with Strain.

You may be familiar with the terms Lactobacillus (genus) casei (species) when learning about probiotics, but now we will talk about Strain? The Strain, or the third part of the probiotic name found in Yakult Probiotic Drink is Shirota. The strain Shirota has 75 years of research supporting its benefits in…

  1. Balancing your digestive system with the beneficial bacteria
  2. Improving regularity
  3. Supporting overall health

Did you know the benefits of probiotics are Strain specific? Know your Strain!  Lactobacillus casei Shirota in Yakult Probiotic Drinks are strong enough to make it to your digestive system alive- that is a pretty strong strain!

TEAM BRK gives Yakult a try…
My family and I tried Yakult for 10 days, each of us drinking one Yakult Probiotic Drink daily (we equally liked the regular Yakult and Yakult Light), and noticed a change in our digestive systems immediately. Let’s just say for a few days we all had our own wind and horn sections. But when that all died down and I will speak for myself, I noticed less embarrassing odors when the horns did toot, if you catch my drift. Blush. Then one curious thing I did notice near the end of the 10 days is that my skin appeared to glow, not its usual sallowness. Hmm, I would really like to explore that more!   Everything I read about improving wellness, the gut is mentioned.

This is a paid post sponsored by Yakult USA and Technorati. I received a free 10-day supply of Yakult Probiotic Drinks to complete my review. Although I have been compensated to help spread the word about strain-based probiotics, all opinions expressed here are genuine and my own.

Robin Sue, this is very interesting and I would certainly love to give it a try. BUT..I have no clue where I would need to go to find it. Obviously, this is very new. Nothing at all within 50 miles of me, so that takes care of that. I might need to write to the company to find out why their plans are for distribution. Thanks for this posting. Susan

They do have a section on their website that can direct you to the closest store. These tasted good and were such an easy way to get our probiotics in all of us.
