“No Small Thing”- HumanaVitality Recipe Refresh Challenge: Part 1

Six food bloggers from around the country travel to Chicago to trash The Chopping Block, and finish the cooking competition with a burpee. At least that is what  the headlines should have read. Wink.  I love this shot! It does look like we are doing a synchronized burpee, but it is actually the part of the competition when the judges yell, “Hands up, step away from your dish.” I finished, we all did, and became part of an idea that started small and grew to something that will change lives, one healthy ingredient at a time.

While strolling along the East Side Gallery in Berlin back in October, I happened upon this African Wisdom quote painted by Muriel Raoux and Kani Alavi on the remains of the Berlin Wall. It’s a powerful quote and it hit me hard. I am a small person, from a small place, who does small things, but am I altering the face of the world? Could I?

Last week HumanaVitality hosted a Recipe Refresh Challenge in which six food bloggers, from around the country, were flown to Chicago and tasked with refreshing a Comfort Food Meal in an “Iron Chef” style cooking competition. Lights, camera, sound, hair and makeup, secret ingredients, interviews, a Lightening Round, judges, and a bloody timer were all a part of making this competition a fun but intense experience.   The competitors from left to right,  Liz from The Lemon Bowl,  Marla from Family Fresh Cooking, Meridith from In Sock Monkey Slippers, me, Paula from Bell’ Alimento,  and Leslie from The Hungry Housewife.

No Small Thing
“140 million people grocery shop in Walmart every week,” quoted Lisa Sutherland Ph.D. during our Recipe Refresh Meet and Greet at Sable the night before our big competition. I even had to tweet Lisa this week and ask, “did I hear you right, that 140 million people grocery shop at Walmart each week?” Those are astounding figures.  Dr. Sutherland, a nutrition expert was a major contributor in of creating the “Great for You” icon that you can find on Walmart’s healthy Great Value items that include fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, eggs, low fat dairy, and whole grain products. Each product had to meet rigorous standards before receiving the label.  Can you imagine the impact our country’s largest retailer can have on its 140 million shoppers by pointing them in a healthier direction? I’m overwhelmed and humbled at the enormity of it all.  What a huge impact this can have on fighting the “Deadly Quartet”- obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension.  HumanaVitality, a wellness company,  has taken it a step further by offering it’s 1.6 million members a 5% discount on “Great for You” products. They have found that offering incentives to members who make healthy lifestyle choices, engages and fuels each member’s desire to follow a healthy life path.

HumanaVitality hosted this competition to show its members that one; they are a groovy company, and two;  encourage their members to take their own favorite recipes and health ’em up, and three; raise awareness and encourage their members to opt in on this “Great for You” benefit. HumanaVitality video taped each Food Blogger sharing her healthy cooking tips, her own fitness journey, and in the end the Comfort Food Recipe that we refreshed for the cooking competition.  They will be sharing our stories and tips with all their members over the next several weeks in the desire that it will encourage their members to experience improved health and wellness through healthy eating and exercise.

Many small people who in many small places, do many small things that can alter the face of the world. This, my friend, was “No Small Thing.”

HumanaVitality sponsored my entire trip to Chicago. All opinions, humility, gratefulness, and experiences are my own.

Come back tomorrow for the low down on the competition, winners, recipes, and sizzle reel.
Oh and a HUGE GIVEAWAY that you do not want to miss. At all.

PS- Speaking of burpees, some friends and I from my CrossFit are taking the 100 day burpee challenge. 1 burpee on day one, 2 on day two, 3 on day three and so forth. Will you join me starting next Monday December 17th?  We can keep eachother accountable! Leave a comment if you want to join me.
